헬렌 매클로이 <노래하는 다이아몬드> 중 브렛 할리데이 서문

브렛 할리데이의 서문은 일본판에 소개되었는데 영어 원서에는 실려있지 않았다. 하여 원문을 보고 싶어서 검색을 했더니 <엘러리 퀸의 회원> 이라는 책에 일부가 소개되었다. 이 책은 엘러리 퀸이 역사상 가장 유명한 탐정 125명을 꼽고 그와 관련된 짧은 이야기를 수록한 것이다. 헬렌 매클로이의 작품은 121번째에 실렸고 마침 브렛 할리데이의 서문이 인용되었다.

Though every clue is part of a logical whole and every mystery is capable of a rational solution, there is something more for the imaginative reader... In each [story] there is an element of the uncanny. In each the reader is challenged to go below the surface of what-seemingly-is to the submerged current of what-may-very-possible-be.”

- 헬렌 맥클로이의 단편집 서문에 대한 요청은 내게 무척 영예롭고 기쁜 일이다. 기회를 준 도드 미드사의 레이몬드 T. 본드씨에게 진심으로 감사드린다. 

오랫동안 나는 미스터리 분야에서 헬렌 매클로이 씨 작품의 열렬한 찬미자였다. 첫번째 장편 <죽음의 춤>(1938)이 나온 다음 해에 나의 마이클 쉐인 시리즈 첫번째 편이 출간되었다(Dividend on Death) 그리고 5년 동안 그녀의 인상적인 작품이 계속해서 세상에 나왔다. 하나 하나가 미스터리 발전의 이정표가 되는 작품들이며 이제서야 정당한 평가를 받게 되었다. 새로운 세대 독자에게 헬렌 매클로이 씨는 <유령의 2/3 (Two-Thirds of a Ghost)>나 <죽이려는 자와 죽은 자(The Slayer and the Slain)>, 혹은 <내가 죽기 전(Before I Die)>등의 저자로 친숙할 것이다. 

총 17권의 서스펜스 소설과 한 권의 미래소설이 헬렌 매클로이 씨 손에서 탄생했는데 우연의 일치인지 같은 시기에 그녀는 17편의 단편을 집필했다. 그 중에 세 편을 장편으로 발전시켰고 <집파리와 카나리아(Cue for Murder)>, <어두운 거울 속에>, <최후의 날(The Last Day)>이 그 결과물이다. 그 중에서 작가가 뽑은 여덟 편이 이 책에 수록되었다. 

‘작가가 뽑았다'는 말에 주목했으면 한다. 이런 종류의 책에 수록되는 작품이 그렇듯 작가의 선택권이 반영되지 않음은 흔한 일이다. 작가는 출판사의 의향에 따르기 마련인지라 자신이 베스트라 생각한 작품을 버리고 편집자가 권하는, 대중의 기호에 맞춘 작품을 선택한다. 바꿔 말하면 수록작에 대한 선택권이 출판사에 있다는 뜻이다. 하지만 이 책은 본드 씨가 헬렌 맥클로이 씨의 선별을 받아들인 결과물로 독자에게는 무척 다행스러운 일이다. 그리하여 그녀가 뽑은 4편, 내가 이제껏 읽은 것 중 가장 독창적이라 생각한 4편을 더했다. 내가 뽑은 4편은 '8월의 황혼에(Silence Burning )', 'Q 가10번지(Number Ten Q Street)', '장소가 바뀌면(Surprise, Surprise! )' '바람이 없는 곳(Windless *나중에 장편 <최후의날>로 발전시킨 작품)이다. 

수록된 단편 중에는 가장 평이 좋았던 '동양 취미(Chinoiserie)' 도 있다. 이런 이야기를 덧붙이는 이유는 발표되기 전 몇 번이나 거절당한 작품이 세상에 나오자 여기저기서 호평이 쏟아지는 경험을 반복하는 작가의 삶을 독자도 이해하리라 생각하기 때문이다. 헬렌 매클로이 씨가 몇년 동안 그런 일을 겪었듯, 책 한 권에 목숨을 거는 작가들은 그로인해 수없이 방황을 한다. 그와 관련하여 월터 스콧은 다음과 같은 말로 요약했다. ‘글쓰기는 무기로 좋을지 몰라도 길잡이로서는 실격이다' 그런가 하면 O. 헨리는 살아 숨쉬는 말로 표현했다. ‘일찌기 이렇게 말한 이가 있었다. 세상은 조개다. 나는 검으로 그걸 열어 젖힌다!' 검 대신 타자기로 대체하면 어떨까.

수록된 단편 중 몇몇은 미스터리 영역을 완벽하게 아우른다. '8월의 황혼에', '바람이 없는 곳',  '장소가 바뀌면'이 그렇다. '어두운 거울 속에' 와 '노래하는 다이아몬드' 는 정신과 의사 배질 윌링이 주인공이다. 나는 매클로이 씨가 평범한 탐정 소설 이상의 뭔가를 독자들에게 내놓았다고 생각한다. 모든 단서는 논리적인 전체의 일부로 작용하고 모든 미스터리에는 합리적인 해결이 뒤따른다. 상상력이 풍부한 독자라면 그 과정에서 더 많은 것을 도출할 수 있다. 이런 단편들이 한 권의 책에 실린 것은 하나의 카테고리로 묶을 수 있어서가 아니라-결단코 아니다-각 작품이 독자적인 스타일로 완성된 작가의 창작물이기 때문이다. 각 작품에서 독자는 겉으로 보이는 것 이면에 존재할지 모르는 어떤 흐름에 몸을 맡길 수 있다. 

서문을 맡은 이의 관례로 응당 베스트로 생각하는 작품을 들어야 할 것이나 나는 거기까지 준비하지는 않았다. ‘바람이 없는 곳’이 가장 좋다 라고 말하려는건 아니다. 하지만 몇 년 전 이 작품의 원고를 처음 읽었을 때 가슴이 심하게 뛰었음을 말해두고 싶다. 마지막 네 문장을 읽었을 때 느꼈던 목이 타들어가는 느낌을 결코 잊을 수 없다. 여러분 또한 마지막 네 문장을 읽은 후 책을 덮고 나와 같은 감정을 느끼기를 바란다.
